Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad - Water Rescue Unit Remount

Built for the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, this specialized remount transforms their existing rescue module into a purpose-built swift-water response unit on a customer-supplied RAM 5500 4x4 chassis. The chassis package is designed for demanding rescue operations with a Fab Fours full-replacement front bumper, 15,000-lb. Warn winch with synthetic rope, aluminum Grip Strut running boards, Voyager 360 backup camera, wireless Firecom intercom system and a custom cab console utilizing Whelen CORE controls.

What really sets this build apart is the attention given to water-rescue equipment management and scene functionality. The existing module is being reconfigured with a dedicated swift-water area featuring power ventilation and dual drain holes, along with two large 48" x 48" roll-out shelves, black Dri-Deck compartment flooring, a Hannay reel with 100 feet of 3/8" hose, frame-mounted compressor tanks and a 175 PSI air compressor. The exterior also incorporates an escape hatch, rescue-style rear bumper, transferred awning and refreshed tread-plate protection throughout the module.

For nighttime and low-visibility rescue operations, CARS selected an extensive Whelen CORE lighting package with M9 DUO warning lights, M6 DUO fender lighting, rub-rail lighting, dual Whelen ARGES remote spotlights, transferred telescopic scene lights, six Whelen load/scene lights and 360-degree red/white ground lighting around the vehicle. A MEPS 6300-watt underhood generator, Kussmaul 20-amp Super Auto Eject, Whelen Howler and Federal Signal e-Q2B further support the unit’s electrical and emergency-response capabilities.

Inside, the existing module is refreshed and adapted for its new mission with three harnessed seating positions, repaired interior surfaces and hardware, transferred interior lighting and an updated self-contained HVAC system. The result is a highly specialized remount that gives an existing rescue body a new platform and purpose-built around equipment accessibility, wet-gear management, scene illumination and the unique demands of swift-water rescue operations.

Can ETA remount an ambulance from another manufacturer?

ETA's remount capabilities are not limited to Frazer units; its inventory and project portfolio show remounts across different ambulance configurations. Whether a particular module can be remounted depends on its construction, condition, chassis compatibility, and specifications, so ETA should evaluate the individual unit before confirming a project.

What is the difference between a Type I, Type II, and Type III ambulance?

A Type I ambulance uses a modular patient compartment mounted on a truck-style chassis. A Type II is a van-based ambulance, such as ETA's Ford Transit 350-based High Ground Conversion. A Type III uses a modular patient compartment on a cutaway van chassis. ETA offers solutions across all three categories.
